Jazz @ the Point 2007
Mark your calendar to save March 1st to 4th, 2007 for this Gala Event.
We are taking a new direction for this upcoming event, and dedicating the 2007 festival to
Mister Art Blakey.
He was an obvious first choice for at least two reasons. First, of course, he lived locally (in Northfield) and was actively involved with the Atlantic City Jazz Festival (RIP). Secondly, he was perhaps the best Jazz educator of all time. When you consider all the young lions who honed their fangs in the Jazz Messengers, well, he was a one-man Berkley.

Art Blakey (Drums) with Woody Shaw & others
Tributes will reign. We hope to see you at this not-to-be-missed four days of excellent Jazz.

SAM DOCKERY
Sam Dockery has enjoyed a reputation for being a very hard-swinging, straight ahead player. Dockery, who is originally from Lawnside, NJ, but has spent much of his life in and around Philly, is perhaps best known for 11 recordings with Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers. Dockery, a frequent visitor to New York City, was Blakey's pianist after Horace Silver and Kenny Drew Sr., and before Junior Mance or Bobby Timmons. During his stay in that legendary group, Dockery was part of a five-man lineup that included trumpeter Bill Hardman, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean (pre-Blue Note), bassist Spanky DeBest; at times, that quintet became a sextet when Chicago icon Johnny Griffin was added on tenor sax.
Blakey wasn't the only well-known jazz musician Dockery played with. The late '50s and early '60s., found him being featured in Philly with tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath's quartet, which employed Buster Williams on bass and Specs Wright on drums. Sam also crossed paths with heavyweight improvisors ranging from trumpeter Clifford Brown to saxophonists Sonny Stitt, Benny Golson & Stan Getz. Bud Powell is a major influence on Dockery, as are Thelonious Monk and Art Tatum.
EARL MAY
Earl May began his career in 1949 in New York City, and honed his craft in places like Minton's Playhouse with musicians such as Lester Young and Mercer Ellington. He was also a protege of the legendary Charles Mingus.
Earl joined the Billy Taylor Trio in 1951, appearing regularly in such clubs as the Hickory House, Birdland and the Downbeat Club. During this period, Earl also worked with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and recorded the classic "Lush Life" with John Coltrane. Earl left the Billy Taylor Trio in 1959, to form his own group and act as musical dirextor and arranger for Gloria Lynne. During the mid-sixties Earl took up the electric bass and led a quartet at the New York City Playboy Club. The Earl May Quartet rapidly became the epitome of great music in the New York club scene. Over the years Earl has performed or recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, Frank Foster, Cab Calloway, Tommy Flanigan, Linda Hopkins, Doc Cheatum, Charles Brown, Jon Hendricks, Marlena Shaw, Ruth Brown, Winard Harper and Phyllis Hyman. He is currently featured with the Barry Harris Trio.
FRANK MAZZEO
Frank Mazzeo is from New Jersey. He has performed with Frank Sinatra, Patti Austin, Bernadette Peters, Louie Bellson, Bill Watrous, the New Jersey and New York Saxophone Quartets, Mel Louis, Lee Konitz, Randy Newman, Christopher Cross, Sam Dockery and Earl May.
BOB FERGUSON
Bob Ferguson has performed throughout the United States, Europe and the Caribbean for over 20 years as a trumpet soloist and section player. A Native of Linwood, New Jersey, Bob began performing in the Atlantic City Club and Hotel scene at the age of 14. Bob began his professional career in 1978 performing in Puerto Rico where he had the opportunity to work with Aldo Mata, Hector Fernandez, Ruben Blades, Gloria Estafan, and members of the Fania All Stars. Since then, Bob has had the opportunity to work with hundreds of Latin and Jazz artists from all idioms of the music business. In the summers of 2005 and 2006 he performed in a tour of Italy with appearances in Rome, Milan and Florence, as well as 8 other cities.
BARBARA LESTER
Barbara Lester is a native Philadelphian who has sung with such jazz greats as Bootsie Barnes, Sam Dockery, Skip Jackson & Barry Harris. You will find Miss Lester between New York and Philadelphia performing at such great venues as Ortlieb's Jazz House, Michaels, Liberties, Serengetti's, the Bilah and Maxines as well as a main feature at the Heritage Jazz Festival.

CHARLES FAMBROUGH
Charles Fambrough will be performing at Mac's Restaurant,
from 8:00 pm to 11:30 pm
Charles Fambrough is not only one of the most critically acclaimed bass players in jazz music today, but has established himself as a composer, producer, arranger, accompanist and soloist.
Fambrough's interest in music began with the study of classical piano but his awareness of the bass register started at an early age. In seventh grade. Fambrough began a decade of classical bass study with Neil Courtney of the Philadelphia Orchestra and met a fellow student, Stanley Clarke. At that time, Philadelphia was considered a jazz "hot spot" with Lee Morgan, John Coltrane, The Heath Brothers,Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Smith and many other great players active in the club scene.
In 1968, Charles began working professionally as a member of the house band for "The Mike Douglas Show", and backing up such performers as Frank Sinatra at the Concord Hotel in the Catskills. Fellow musicians were soon inviting Fambrough to play club dates in New York. "At first it was strictly electric bass gigs, playing funk and R&B" he remembers, "but as soon as word got around that I could read music and play upright bass, I started working with the jazz cats."
In 1969, Fambrough worked with Andy Aaron's Mean Machine, a local Philadelphia pop group that featured a young saxophonist named Grover Washington Jr. Washington formed his own group in 1970, and Charles spent the next three and a half years touring and performing with him.
In 1975, Fambrough delved into the Brazilian musical experience as a member of Airto Moreira's band. He then joined forces with fellow Philadelphian Mc Coy Tyner. He anchored Tyner's band from 1978 to 1982, then joined Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers for a five year stint. The tenure with Tyner and Blakey proved invaluable to the emerging young bassist. Charles recalls, "Mc Coy showed me how to play with endurance, Blakey gave me refinement".
Fambrough helped groom a young trumpeter named Wynton Marsalis to Art Blakey's University of Swing, and Marsalis later hired Charles as the bassist in the first Wynton Marsalis Quintet. Charles' recording works with that group include the albums "Wynton Marsalis", "Live at Bubba's" and "Fathers and Sons". Fambrough's best known recordings with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers are "Album of the Year", "Straight Ahead" "Live/Montreux","Keystone 3" and "Oh, By The Way". He is also prominently featured on the Mc Coy Tyner recordings "Focal Point", "Live at the Great American Music Hall" and "Horizon". In addition, Charles has played or recorded with Freddie Hubbard, Rashan Roland Kirk, Shirley Scott, Roy Hargrove, Kenny Barron, Horace Silver, Roy Haines, Stanley Turrentine and many others.

"He goes it alone on a version of "Chelsea Bridge" that shows off the strong, warm tone of his guitar".
"The Betz quartet might be coming out of a traditional, straightahead approach, but the push and pull of their musicmakes them stand out from the crowd".

SIORA
SIORA will be performing at Stumpo's
from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Using the universal language of jazz, Philadelphia's SIORA transcends boundaries, drawing us back to intimate human connection, while catapulting us "Face to Face" ("Vis-a-Vis") into cultural counterpoints.
The SIORA sound is contemporary world jazz featuring the rich contralto of Phyllis Chapell soaring above keyboard artistry of composer Dan Kleiman who ".plays exceptionally well...with virtuosity and perpetual creativity." (Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune) "Ms Chapell's calling card is her facility with songs in their native languages, but her trump is a voice that is filled with smokey nuance and emotion," wrote Cathy DeDe of the Lake George Chronicle after SIORA headlined at the Lake George Jazz Weekend with clarinetist Don Byron.
Their latest release "Vis-a-Vis" is a collaboration with Grammy-nominated producer Paul Wickliffe. This CD is a multi-cultural journey in seven languages, including three provocative selections in English. Guest artists includeHoward Levy (Bela Fleck) on harmonica, John Swana (Criss Cross) on trumpet, and Ralph Bowen (Criss Cross) on sax and flute. Afro-Brazilian and Middle Eastern rhythms underscore an array of wind instruments adding exotic flavor to this international odyssey.
Composer/pianist Dan Kleiman has performed/recorded with Grammy-winning saxophonist Ernie Watts, Mike Stern Benny Golson, Charles Fambrough and Clyde Stubblefield. Rounding out the group are bassist Steve Beskrone (Pat Martino, Horace Silver, Ray Charles); drummers Ted Thomas (Rachelle Ferrelle,Emeril Live) and Jimmy Coleman (Amos Lee); and percussionist Raphael Cruz (Brecker Bros.,Chaka Khan, Paquito D'Rivera).
"Our music, wherever it comes from and wherever it goes," says Kleiman, "passes through the prism of jazz. It allows us the freedom to navigate- to cross musical borders."
"Blending world music and contemporary jazz into a soundscape that needs no translation, SIORA takes you on a journey of the soul, touching down in Rio, Paris, Mazer-e-Sharif and points beyond" (William Page, Straight No Chaser)
